Artist Among Poets

I learned

Throughout the course of this class, I’ve discovered a new perspective of poetry. I use to think of poetry as simply lyrically wrapped words into beautiful statements. I could not be further from the truth, as poets hold much more ability in their craft. From distilling their perspective of life into verses, their poetry takes on a new language of emotion. Allowing the audience to think and feel like they do, poets are craftsmen of emotion. Through timeless diversity poets stand up to issues and break stigmas through words. Dismantling perceptions through carefully crafted lines that pierce the mind and bring audience members into a new understanding.

This new perspective not only brought a deeper emotional understanding of poetry, but also a history lesson intertwined. As we stepped through the time periods, the classic poems we dug into provided a new understanding of the era and showed us the emotions behind the history. These poems transformed understandings of topics through the poet’s personal accounts of war, disease, sexuality, and race. Opening doors to reflect on subject and gain a new level of empathy for those I may have overlooked.

On a personal level, I’ve felt more comfortable in believing my own power of words. With a new analytical approach to shape the way phrases are said, I’ve understood the importance of tone and pace. Being able to take a new spin on my own written projects and add more life to them for the audience to absorb easier.

Artist Role

I’ve always believed artist held a greater power than crafting beauty. This class expanded that to discover the many forms an artist can take. Through whichever medium is chose, creativity opens the door of possibilities for communication. Transforming ideas to be translated across languages, artist create a gateway for empathy. As we progress forward, even more now than ever, this is vital as we’re becoming hyper-connected. With a vast array of perspectives, understanding is needed to connect rather than clash. Allowing society to grow forward into the future, rather than being held by in their traditional ways. Artist will be the translators of perspective, crafting emotion,  transcribing thoughts, and distilling behaviours into forms for all to understand. Their role has been pivotal over the ages, and their importance has increased to an absolute necessity. It’s a great responsibility on artist, yet with this a great joy in knowing the power of impact they hold. Hopefully with the evolution of technology, these advancements will connect artist to come together to empowering each other. In the end, it is these visionaries who will think differently, defy expectations, and create tomorrow.
