Sirens pierce the silence Disoriented lying stunned Ripped from the world moments before The screaming culprit lying smug next to us A forceful k.o. shuts up the villain A sliver of light dances across silk sheets Rustling fabrics are met with slow groans A darkness glows orange as the light hits the walls of eyes Quivering frustration they creak open Fighting the weight of gravity No. A defiance is proclaimed mid-struggle Thundering boom ushers in darkness Feathers erupt as a pillow collides with flesh The softest explosion. Weathered flesh, tears turned frost Alone in the mercy of winter's wrath An icy cavern in which I dug Sorrow lined walls bear my craft You hold the coat, my only hope Yet this wall I built divides us Blinded by grief I had not seen Alone I'm left waiting for your outstretched hand Trembling words halted by walls Please clothe me for I did not wish to fall

If I'm able I'm able to be moved by the words in a poem, then I pass it off as good. Words can create understanding or inspire, I think at its core a poem should achieve one of these. Some may create a revelation on a topic that before was not understood. Or one may simply elicit a feeling of joy through a smile after finishing reading. Perhaps understanding and emotion fall in the same category of empathy. But that's such a broad subject which has a vast range of how to quantify it. Landing along that spectrum should justify that your poem has been successful. Symbolism was a challenge to connect emotion to tangible images. It was difficult to take such an abstract notion and solidify it so it could be understood. Once I chose imagery, crafting a connection of actions along with it was the next hurdle.
